Whitney Museum of American Art

Hello

Today we are going to Muse about a special museum.  If this is your first visit, welcome to Musings. If you have been here before, welcome back. Over time we are going to talk about many things: the past, the present, perhaps the future, travel, art, society and more. Wherever my musing takes me. I hope you will come along with me.

Check out the Whitney Museum of American Art

Recently we spent some time in New York City.  We did the normal things:   met friends for lunch;  took in a show (Book of Mormon);  went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  And we went down to the old meat-packing district to see the new Whitney Museum of Art.  I recommend it.

The building is spacious with large open exhibit areas on eight floors.

Currently on display is art of the twentieth century, starting around 1900 and going to 2000.  It is fabulous.  I respond strongly to the artists of the mid-century, artists such as  Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper, Paul Cadmus, Georgia O’Keeffe and Alexander Calder.  Click on THE COLLECTION and see more about the work on exhibit.

I was enthralled by the building as well as the art.  Each floor has an outside balcony or deck  with incredible views.

Normally in Manhattan you cannot see very far.  You are in a canyon of concrete, tall buildings all around.  But the meat-packing district consists of relatively short buildings, two, three and four stories.  The Whitney towers over them.  Its great.

If you visit you will find the old meat-packing district has become gentrified.  There are interesting bistros, restaurants, and drinking establishments on nearly every street.  And, of course, there are these.
