Green Algae

Hello

Today we are going to Muse about algae. If this is your first visit, welcome to Musings. If you have been here before, welcome back. Over time we are going to talk about many things: the past, the present, perhaps the future, travel, art, society and more. Wherever my musing takes me. I hope you will come along with me.

Fine Art America, a Pixel.com company

Pixel.com is producing reproductions of my artwork.  The work is available as traditional prints on canvas, paper or metal, but it also available on greeting cards, phone covers, tote bags, shower curtains,  t-shirts and more.  It makes for some very personalized gifts.  Below is the link to the site.  When you click on an image in the site,  a menu of products will appear.  I hope you like it.

Summer Doldrums

Wow.  It is hot and humid here in Florida.  These are lazy days on the beach.

Up and down the shore are white markers indicating sea turtle nests.

It is their time of year.

The water is warm and very pleasant.  Here at least in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach. Unfortunately a little north in Martin County and south in Lake Worth there is a serious outbreak of green algae where water discharged from Lake Okeechobee is released through the canals.

It is affecting many people and businesses, closing beaches and waterways and fouling the air with its odor. We are fortunate not to have it.

In an odd way this can be attributed to climate change.  We have had more rain than normal this early in the year with the result that the water level in Lake Okeechobee is at 15 feet above sea level.  The level needs to be lowered to make room for storm run off in the event of a hurricane.  The water discharge is warm and full of nutrients leached into the lake by the rain.  This has spawned the algae. It is a mess by any measure.

All of this is relative.  When we think of the people in West Virginia dealing with the floods or those in California, Arizona and New Mexico dealing with the fires our concerns seem insignificant.  Still it affects many people’s lives and livelihoods and the government, state or federal, should address the problem.  As it is, nothing seems to be being done.
